Sublime Quotations
I decided that it was not wisdom that enabled poets to write their poetry, but a kind of instinct or inspiration, such as you find in seers and prophets who deliver all their sublime messages without knowing in the least what they mean. Socrates There is only one step from the sublime to the ridiculous. Napoleon Bonaparte I kiss the soil as if I placed a kiss on the hands of a mother, for the homeland is our earthly mother. I consider it my duty to be with my compatriots in this sublime and difficult moment. Pope John Paul II Grant me the treasure of sublime poverty: permit the distinctive sign of our order to be that it does not possess anything of its own beneath the sun, for the glory of your name, and that it have no other patrimony than begging. Francis of Assisi As a means of contrast with the sublime, the grotesque is, in our view, the richest source that nature can offer. Victor Hugo Sublime upon sublime scarcely presents a contrast, and we need a little rest from everything, even the beautiful. Victor Hugo Duty is the most sublime word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less. Robert E. Lee There is sublime thieving in all giving. Someone gives us all he has and we are his. Eric Hoffer Genius creates, and taste preserves. Taste is the good sense of genius; without taste, genius is only sublime folly. Alexander Pope Whatever our creed, we stand with admiration before the sublime character of Jesus. E. Stanley Jones |
