An offer of two things, one of which may be chosen, but not both; a choice between two things, so that if one is taken, the other must be left. Either of two things or propositions offered to one's choice. Thus when two things offer a choice of one only, the two things are called alternatives. Alternative Quotations
In war as in life, it is often necessary when some cherished scheme has failed, to take up the best alternative open, and if so, it is folly not to work for it with all your might. Winston Churchill I do like beer, but lately I've started drinking non-alcoholic beer and I like the taste of it and I don't get the alcohol, so that's a good alternative also. Mike Ditka The United States prefers that Iraq meet its obligations voluntarily, yet we are prepared for the alternative. George W. Bush For every failure, there's an alternative course of action. You just have to find it. When you come to a roadblock, take a detour. Mary Kay Ash That's why I'm very proud of being American. I'm proud to pay taxes. I pay a lot of taxes, but it sure beats the alternative. Payne Stewart The political arena leaves one no alternative, one must either be a dunce or a rogue. Emma Goldman The Negroes are facing the alternative of rising in the sphere of production to supply their proportion of the manufacturers and merchants or of going down to the graves of paupers. Carter G. Woodson We have always said that in our war with the Arabs we had a secret weapon - no alternative. Golda Meir In prehistoric times, mankind often had only two choices in crisis situations: fight or flee. In modern times, humor offers us a third alternative; fight, flee - or laugh. Robert Orben Liberalism is, I think, resurgent. One reason is that more and more people are so painfully aware of the alternative. John Kenneth Galbraith |
