I guess why the Ocean's films are hard for me is because on the one hand you have to make sure the performances are there, but on the other hand it's a film that demands, to my mind, a very layered and complex visual scheme. That takes a lot of time to figure out.

Steven Soderbergh I like working closely with artists. I think that's very important in fantasy and science fiction - the visual aspect of the worlds and the characters. Margaret Weis I love writing dialogue, and I think a lot of my writing is visual and very cinematic. Jessica Hagedorn I mean, making art is about objectifying your experience of the world, transforming the flow of moments into something visual, or textual, or musical, whatever. Art creates a kind of commentary. Barbara Kruger I really like books that you can kind of hear as much as think about, that are so graphic and visual. Laurie Anderson I really want to do a book on the history of the no-wave music scene in New York, how it extended out and formed lots of other things. It was such a great visual culture. Thurston Moore I think almost always that what gets me going with a story is the atmosphere, the visual imagery, and then I people it with characters, not the other way around. Ann Beattie I think my books come out very visual, which is an obvious consequence. Lee Child I think setting a goal, getting a visual image of what it is you want. You've got to see what it is you want to achieve before you can pursue it. Chuck Norris I think so. I can't think of anything that requires more finesse than comedy, both from a verbal and visual point of view. Stacy Keach I think television has betrayed the meaning of democratic speech, adding visual chaos to the confusion of voices. What role does silence have in all this noise? Federico Fellini I think that cognitive scientists would support the view that our visual system does not directly represent what is out there in the world and that our brain constructs a lot of the imagery that we believe we are seeing. Galen Rowell I think the composer and production staff of an opera have a real responsibility to use visual elements of all kinds to make clear to the American audience, at any rate, exactly what is going on. John Eaton I think the main influence has been living in New York City. Aside from all the crap around 9/11, I find it very demanding to think amid all the noise and visual pollution. George Murray I think we will always have the impulse towards visual poetry with us, and I wouldn't agree with Bly that it's a bad thing. It depends on the ability of the individual poet to do it well, and to make a shape which is interesting enough to hold your attention. James Laughlin I try to ask visual questions. I'll ask what someone was wearing, if that seems relevant. If possible, I'll walk over the same ground that they're depicting. Of course, I can never get it precisely as it was. Joe Sacco I try to deal with the complexities of power and social life, but as far as the visual presentation goes I purposely avoid a high degree of difficulty. Barbara Kruger I try to make songs visual and tactile to kind of put you into the action. Richard Thompson I used to hate, with a capitol H, making videos. It was nothing but a chore. It was something you had to do to have your music accepted in the visual medium. Sheena Easton I was always a visual person. I could see things visually. I had a harder time with numbers and logic, and I always had more of an artistic sensibility. So that I could do. And it was something that I really loved. Bruce Davison |
