Whether in print or other media, a good biography is more than a court record or a stringing together of already familiar sources. It breathes life into the subject.
Noel Riley Fitch
For some reason, Superman seems to be held to higher standards on the subject of secret/super identities than other superheroes. No one ever says, 'Peter Parker was a nerdy kid. He can't possibly be Spider-Man, attract a good-looking gal, work in a newspaper, etc.' And no one gets hung up on whether his nerdiness is a disguise.
Since I was a kid, I've had this morbid fascination with dark and scary subject matter.
You have to edit the material. That assumes that some kind of a mind is operating in relation to the material. Not all minds are the same. Every aspect of filmmaking requires choice. The selection of the subject, the shooting, editing and length are all aspects of choice.
When I'm writing, I separate from everyone. Even my band. I push myself, and I'm alone with my thoughts. Separating from friends and comforts and family lets you think a lot deeper about subject matter. Working alone drives me a little crazy, but it makes the writing as honest as possible.
We are also assisting the refugees who have fled across the border to Chad. As many of them have been subject to attacks by militia crossing from Sudan, UNHCR is mounting a major logistical operation to establish camps and transfer refugees away from the border zone.
History is not reassuring on the subject of the longevity of seemingly lasting great nations, is it?
I'm not freakishly short. I had, on my show, used shortness as a joke subject; it didn't really bother me.
But be that as it may, I think it is more respectful to you that I should speak to you upon and do my best to interest you in the subject which has occupied me, and in which I am myself most interested.
And in another point of view, I think it is right that the address of a president should be on his own subject, and that different subjects should be thus brought in turn before the meetings.
Scientists should not do animal testing if there is any alternative, but subject to that, I would support it on grounds of the medical benefits.
David Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Turville
If I am to judge others, I should be subject to be judged. You make your bed, you must lie in it.
I'm very happy to be a foreigner in Japan, and I can't think of a more wonderful place to live, but at the same time, I would never want to be Japanese, because they are subject to stresses that I am not.
I'd have to struggle to find a subject in which I can't get some kind of interested pulse started.
My art has always been in response to visions. Rather than confine my subject to representations of the outer worlds, I include portrayals of the multi-dimensional imaginal realms that pull us toward consciousness evolution.
I think pop culture is the greatest subject matter out there - 'Other People's Lives,' as we wrote about on the last Duran Duran album. Most ideas for great songs come from real situations, something your friend said to you the night before, the girl that just left, or something traumatic in your life.
History was always the subject that I loved the most, and I felt it gave me the deepest sense of our humanity and who we are and where we're going.
I've always been slightly embittered about computers because it was the only subject I failed at school.
But I owe it to the subject to say, that it has long afforded me what philosophy is so often thought, and made, barren of - the fun of discovery, the pleasures of co-operation, and the satisfaction of reaching agreement.
J. L. Austin
Yet enthusiasm is no excuse for the historian going off balance. He should remind the reader that outcomes were neither inevitable nor foreordained, but subject to a thousand changes and chances.
Samuel E. Morison
A filial son to his father can be a traitorous subject to his ruler.
I think that if I would talk on a political subject, if I talk about it, it would divide the audience on that issue. That's not my issue.
I know there's a principle of spirit. It works without space-time. I am subject to that principle, in spirit and in belief of body. Learn how spirit works, a few simple rules, living a perfect spiritual life is easy.
Everything is subject to change except God Himself.
Charles McCarry is the best modern writer on the subject of intrigue - by the breadth of Alan Furst, by the fathom of Eric Ambler, by any measure.
