Talking about covers, whether visually or sonically, if a particular combination of notes struck a chord in your heart in a way that you want to be a part of it by covering that song, then there's nothing wrong with it.

Ville Valo I don't mean this in a stuck-up way, but I needed an attitude song. Gwen Stefani There's a lot of rage... you have to express it somehow. If I didn't express it in song, I'd become incredibly violent. Siobhan Fahey I don't need to hear Bill to go through a song. I need to hear Keith to go through a song. I know Bill will be playing what I'm playing anyway. I need to hear Keith because it's all there: the time, the chord changes, and all the licks you have to follow. Charlie Watts But I like to listen to demos. I like to hear the finished product. It's like listening to a song - I mean, a story. If you're going to sit here and tell me a story, I just like to listen. I don't want to make them up. Reba McEntire I was singing a lot of waltzes. And I was with Jerry Kennedy, my producer, and he was playing me some songs, and he said, hey, I want to play you this song that I'm going to get Jackie Ward to record. Reba McEntire I've got CDs in my car, listening all the time for that next song, because everybody's looking. Reba McEntire We went for the best overall feel on each song. There are no musical overdubs at all. It's a true live record; it's one of the few true live records out there. Ben Harper I really feel there's no limitation on what this band can do in the studio or on the stage. That's an empowering feeling - that we can bring a song to life. Ben Harper 'Time after Time' is one of the best pop songs ever written, in my opinion. It's an incredible, beautiful, timeless song. Sarah McLachlan I think one of the things about writing in the studio is that the song hasn't matured, if you like, so quite often the vocals are early attempts. Whereas once you've taken it out on the road a bit, you learn more about a song. Peter Gabriel I think that you get the mood of a song stronger if you get it right that way. On the other hand, you put some songs out live and they don't catch flight. They just flop. It is hard to tell until they are out there. Peter Gabriel The earth has grown old with its burden of care But at Christmas it always is young, The heart of the jewel burns lustrous and fair And its soul full of music breaks the air, When the song of angels is sung. Phillips Brooks I like Fisher Price music, nursery rhymes, and the alphabet song. Tre Cool It was my 16th birthday - my mom and dad gave me my Goya classical guitar that day. I sat down, wrote this song, and I just knew that that was the only thing I could ever really do - write songs and sing them to people. Stevie Nicks David Lee Roth had the idea that if you covered a successful song, you were half way home. C'mon - Van Halen doing 'Dancing in the Streets'? It was stupid. I started feeling like I would rather bomb playing my own songs than be successful playing someone else's music. Eddie Van Halen I'm totally convinced I can write the perfect pop song. Moon Unit Zappa But there's actually a lot of punk bands out there that go out of the norm, use odd time signatures, or a lot of different tempo changes in a song. Travis Barker So writing a song is much harder than doing a classical piece for me, because in a classical piece, I can just let the mood dictate what's going to happen. Glenn Danzig But when you get to a song, not only do you have to do a vocal melody, you have to write words and not be redundant and make some semblance of a story. Glenn Danzig |
