Technically, I've been retired for some time now. All I ever do is occasionally write songs for friends, such as one, for a friend who had just turned 80. I wrote a song for him called, The First 80 Years are The Hardest.

Tom Glazer I was half asleep lying there writing this lyric in my head at about 3:30 in the morning. I woke Steve up with this idea and then we went into the living room where there was a little upright piano and finished the song. I wonder where that piano is now? Jim Capaldi Since I have been singing for so many years, I don't always need to approach a song quite so laboriously and meticulously. Kate Smith One song will launch you, but you don't want to be a one-song artist. Michael Bolton For several centuries what has passed for song in literary circles was any text that looked like the lyrics for a commonplace melodic setting. David Antin After six or seven performances of any song, you begin to perform it rather than feel it. Graham Nash An un-named song is like an un-named child, it has no identity. Robyn Hitchcock You have to insulate yourself - I'm talking about from everything, people can be talking to you and you won't hear 'em - that's how you write a song. And I haven't been able to do that over here 'cause I'm so busy and then, when I am off, I want to get away from music. Mel Tillis You're always frustrated, you don't have the chance to do a song on the album, like the Beatles did with Ringo and George, or like Led Zeppelin, where everybody was given a chance to contribute. There never is a chance with the Stones. Bill Wyman Although, my experience when I've been depressed, not only am I too depressed to sit down and write a song, I'm too depressed to pick up my feet. So if you can at least write about it, you're halfway away from it. Paul Westerberg My best album is called In Search Of A Song. That was my best shot right there. My finest hour, as they say. I could listen to the whole thing all the way through. There's nothing really crammed into it. Tom T. Hall Well, I make every song I sing personal. I've never chosen a song that wasn't. Carly Simon So we're considering doing a new Christmas album, because there's been Christmas episodes since then, and maybe finally do the version of "The Most Offensive Song Ever" with lyrics intact. Trey Parker I don't dream songs. I'm more apt to write dreams down and then to be able to interpret them into a song. I also tend to get up and write prose in the morning from which will come songs. Judy Collins 'Tis easy enough to be pleasant, When life flows along like a song; But the man worth while is the one who will smile when everything goes dead wrong. Ella Wheeler Wilcox I wish I had a nickel for every song that I've left in the bathroom, written down on a matchbox, or just totally forgotten about. Tommy Shaw Most of our stuff was trial and error. You live with a tape recorder, you turn it on, you play the song and you listen to it. Levon Helm We sing a little song before we eat, a little blessing before we eat, and it's really - we're thanking the Lord and the Earth for the food that we eat, and it really brings you together in a profound kind of way. Phil Lesh Even if I don't release it myself, somebody else might hear it and want to record it. When you write a song, it gives it that potential. Smokey Robinson He saw us play a few times in fact. I did this song called I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes, and Jimi loved it. He paid me a huge compliment when he told me that he was thinking of doing something similar himself! Alvin Lee |
