I write because something inner and unconscious forces me to. That is the first compulsion. The second is one of ethical and moral duty. I feel responsible to tell stories that inspire readers to consider more deeply who they are.

David Guterson I write for a certain sphere of readers in the United States who on average watch seven and a half hours of multichannel television per day. Jerzy Kosinski I'd always loved to read - and come from a family of readers - but I never thought about writing as a career. Nora Roberts I've gotten to know a number of readers from being online, and really treasure the time I've spent with them. Nora Roberts I've included these little jokes and mysteries in my writing for the amusement of readers. Armistead Maupin If I am communicating to my readers exactly what the White House believes on any certain issue, that's reporting to them an unvarnished, unfiltered version of what they - the Administration - believe. Jeff Gannon If there is any secret to my success, I think it's that my characters are very real to me. I feel everything they feel, and therefore I think my readers care about them. Sidney Sheldon If writers learn more from their books than do readers, perhaps I may have begun to learn. Lloyd Alexander If you ask 20 different readers why they read, they will all be right. Teresa Nielsen Hayden If you read in front of your kids, it's very likely that they'll become readers, too. John Lithgow In any event, it's not exactly a secret to regular readers what my views on the war are. Garry Trudeau In hard-core science fiction in which characters are responding to a change in environment, caused by nature or the universe or technology, what readers want to see is how people cope, and so the character are present to cope, or fail to cope. James Gunn In Japan they prefer the realistic style. They like answers and conclusions, but my stories have none. I want to leave them wide open to every possibility. I think my readers understand that openness. Haruki Murakami In relation to a writer, most readers believe in the Double Standard: they may be unfaithful to him as often as they like, but he must never, never be unfaithful to them. W. H. Auden In the end, my reasons for moving down the timeline and introducing a new cast have more to do with keeping myself entertained, on the assumption that if I get bored, my readers are going to be even more bored. Raymond E. Feist In the polls, over 80% support the right to die and have done for the last 25 years. Even 80% of practising Catholics and Protestants support it, plus 76% of Church Times readers. Polly Toynbee It is more difficult to keep the attention of hearers than of readers. Lascelles Abercrombie It seems to me that readers sometimes make the genesis of a poem more mysterious than it is (by that I perhaps mean, think of it as something outside their own experience). James Schuyler It's been a great place to get in touch with what people are really thinking. And to make contact with readers and other writers. Egalitarian, wide open, like the Wild West! Greg Bear It's the publicity function of Amnesty that I think has made its name so widely known, not only to readers in the world, but to governments - and that's what matters. Peter Benenson |
