I may be wrong in that, but not I think in putting the questions. In our modern democracy the government needs not a unanimous but a general support for war before it orders our forces to fight.

Douglas Hurd I received orders from Congress to proceed to Charleston in South Carolina, for the purpose of Co'operating with General Lincoln in the defense of that Capitol. Abraham Whipple I remember having an argument with Alan, I said the Queen's not just going to call the guy up and send him out to do it. And Alan says, well, how would a monarch give orders to her assassin. Eddie Campbell I think in the corridors of power these dangerous kinds of orders are issued in a much more vague way, passed down two or three levels of command before they're given to the assassin. Eddie Campbell I was in uniform for four years, and I know that heroism doesn't occur from taking orders, but rather from people who through their own willpower and strength are willing to sacrifice their lives for an idea. Thor Heyerdahl I was induced to establish several orders of merit, from conviction that emulation, well directed, becomes a useful servant; and, that the latent genius of some youth is more easily brought into action this way, than by the more sordid gratification of self-interest. Joseph Lancaster I've no idea what Eddie Irvine's orders are, but he's following them superlatively well. Murray Walker If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and airplanes. Joseph Stalin In 2003, the value of Airbus's orders was more than twice as much as Boeing's. Norm Dicks In Gaul were two orders, the nobility and the priesthood, while the people, says Caesar, were all slaves. John Lothrop Motley In the 9th grade I began my first wage work for the West Side Drug store delivering prescriptions and sundries on my bicycle to customers who called in orders. Vernon L. Smith Issue the orders Sir, and I will storm Hell. Anthony Wayne It even has the same phraseology as the English orders of knighthood, companions and this sort of thing. George Woodcock It is made the duty of every Commanding Officer in the Department, to arrest and send to these Headquarters, under guard, every officer or soldier who may be found absent from his command, without the regular leave in writing, prescribed by Regulations and General Orders. John H. Morgan Jewish fundamentalism is teaching that Jews can fight with guns and with civil war, against being relocated off the West Bank, and disobey the orders of their government. That is the call to jihad, to several kinds of jihad. Arthur Hertzberg Manage yourself first and others will take your orders. David Seabury My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of the higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military. Smedley Butler No human creature can give orders to love. George Sand Now that I look back, I realize that a life predicated on being obedient and taking orders is a very comfortable life indeed. Living in such a way reduces to a minimum one's need to think. Adolf Eichmann Of course the orders all converge backward in time, to different degrees. George G. Simpson |
