I'm just trying to tell a good story and make thought-provoking, entertaining films. I just try and draw upon the great culture we have as a people, from music, novels, the streets.

Spike Lee I'm writing a movie about Mozart going to New York in the '60s. I've been reading so many novels. John Cale I've had three novels published, and I was working a little bit in theater in Ireland. I wrote one film script just to see what it would turn out like. Neil Jordan I've made seventeen or eighteen films now, only two of which have been original screenplays, all the others have been based on short stories or novels, and I find the long short story ideal for adaptation. Satyajit Ray I've read short stories that are as dense as a 19th century novel and novels that really are short stories filled with a lot of helium. Lynn Abbey I've seen novels that have grown out of one story in a collection. But it hasn't occurred to me to take any of those stories and build on them. They seem very finished for me, so I don't feel like going back and dredging them up. Jhumpa Lahiri I've written 16 children's books and five unpublished novels. Some of the latter were breathtakingly bad. Mark Haddon I've written only two novels, but they're both long ones, and they each took a decade to write. Donna Tartt I've written six novels and four pieces of nonfiction, so I don't really have a genre these days. Anne Lamott If I had killed Crow off I can think of least six novels I would never have written, 400,000 words' worth of very necessary experience. Brian Lumley If I really considered myself a writer, I wouldn't be writing screenplays. I'd be writing novels. Quentin Tarantino If you enjoy math and you write novels, it's very rare that you'll get a chance to put your math into a novel. I leapt at the chance. Mark Haddon In all my novels, I deal with the many problems and prejudices which exist for Black people in Britain today. Buchi Emecheta In effect I am not a novelist, but rather a failed essayist who started to write novels because he didn't know how to write essays. Jose Saramago In Hollywood we acquire the finest novels in order to smell the leather bindings. Ernst Lubitsch In most conventional novels, God is not allowed to be nuts. Nor are nuts allowed to be God. John Sladek In suspense novels even subplots about relationships have to have conflict. Jeffery Deaver In the first year, 1988, I wrote and sold 3 novels. George Stephen In the past, it was only in science fiction novels that you could read about ordinary people being able to go to space... But you laid the foundation for space tourism. Nursultan Nazarbayev It always strikes me how almost unbelievably bad are the early versions of my novels. Nicholas Mosley |
