Obviously I'd love to work with any of these great directors because every time I've worked with them I've gained a tremendous amount as an actor. Each director has his own way of pushing you towards improving yourself.

Zhang Ziyi The thing is David is also aware of everything and it's not like you're going somewhere the director is not. William Hurt I'm trying to interpret the film through the director's head, but it all comes out through me. So, a composer is kind of like a psychic medium. Danny Elfman And I think being a good director is being able to be completely tyrannical and you?ve got to be an absolute dictator while at the same time, you have to listen and see everything because it can all change on a dime. Bob Balaban From a writing point of view, you now have teams of screenwriters working with a director. What's lost in the process is the power of that one heart, brain, gut and soul that makes something an original piece of writing. Joe Eszterhas One guy records the voices, another guy times the storyboard, another guy times the sheets, one guy is the story editor. All these jobs should be covered by the director. John Kricfalusi I didn't really know what I wanted to do, and then I got this call from a casting director in Los Angeles. She remembered me from something years before, and she called my mom wanting me to audition for this thing. Scott Speedman Ten years ago, it was really difficult for a young actress to walk onto a set and disagree with the director and having that be OK and have a conversation about it and everyone be cool with it. Maggie Gyllenhaal You're in the business - when you're a writer, producer, director - to get ratings. Norman Lear I discovered early in my movie work that a movie is never any better than the stupidest man connected with it. There are times when this distinction may be given to the writer or director. Most often it belongs to the producer. Ben Hecht My parents, and especially my mother, encouraged by the director of the local school which I was attending, wanted in spite of everything to send me to a National School of Arts and Crafts so that I could later become an engineer. Leon Jouhaux There were movies that always made me want to be a director. You see brilliant scenes and the way the emotions were handled. I thought, I'd really like to do that. Bruce Beresford As a director he was not that interested in Vader. David Prowse I seemed to belong to three countries: I had an apartment in Paris, a house in Hollywood, and when I married British theater director Peter Hall, I moved to London. Leslie Caron So whatever I might have started to learn at that age was all undone by the next director and next crew in the next cheap picture, because I was allowed to get away with murder. Jackie Cooper The first assistant director is just so important that the choice of that person is critical to the movie. John Frankenheimer But I would like to think that it's the actor that makes the difference in these cases. Not the director, not the guy that wrote the book, not the guy that adapted it for the screen, but the actor. Ray Walston I think, frankly, that I'm a better director than I was an actor. Jonathan Frakes That's why I had to leave Hair on Broadway, because I did it for about a year, and one night I was doing the show, and I realized, well, this is not real. I told the director. He says, man, it was a killer show tonight. Barry McGuire How many movies do you see when you can say this director really knew what film he wanted to make? I can count them on the fingers of one hand. Gary Oldman |
