I don't want to say I hear voices; well, actually I do hear voices, but I don't think it's supernatural. I think it's just that when characters are given enough texture and backbone, then lo and behold, they stand on their own.

Anne Tyler I find it very difficult to be two different characters at the same time - actress and mother. Kristin Scott Thomas Texas was defined by its larger-than-life characters, particularly politicians. Jessica Savitch We started getting the script to different people and we were in the business of trying to fund it so we could get it off and running, and all the characters and sets designed and everything. Don Bluth I'll write maybe one long paragraph describing the events, then a page or two breaking the events into chapters, and then reams of pages delving into my characters. After that, I'm ready to begin. Anne Tyler I have a cheat-sheet for each one of my characters about their personality, the way they look, etc. So there is no possible way that I could have writer's block. R. L. Stine The Little Friend is a long book. It's also completely different from my first novel: different landscape, different characters, different use of language and diction, different approach to story. Donna Tartt I think almost always that what gets me going with a story is the atmosphere, the visual imagery, and then I people it with characters, not the other way around. Ann Beattie I try to ground most of my characters in reality somehow. That's kind of what I bring to the table. Donnie Wahlberg There are certainly times when my own everyday life seems to retreat so the life of the story can take me over. That is why a writer often needs space and time, so that he or she can abandon ordinary life and "live" with the characters. Margaret Mahy You read about somebody, and it doesn't really matter whether or not they really exist - the point is that you get into them like real characters. John Hartford The relationship between reader and characters is very difficult. It is even more peculiar than the relationship between the writer and his characters. Guillermo Cabrera Infante A lot of male actors are method actors and they become the characters which they both were. Izabella Scorupco Fiction is about intimacy with characters, events, places. Robert Morgan The constraints of melodrama can be a great blessing, because they demand that all the characters involved - as absurd and extreme as they may initially seem - must stay utterly rooted in their own reality, or the whole project collapses. Stanley Tucci It's true that it's a solitary occupation, but you would be surprised at how much companionship a group of imaginary characters can offer once you get to know them. Anne Tyler When you throw punches at actors, you stop, you pull it, and it looks like you pulled it. When you throw punches at cartoon characters, they are not there, so you can swing through. It looks like you really decked them. Brendan Fraser My characters surprise me constantly. My characters are like my friends - I can give them advice, but they don't have to take it. If your characters are real, then they surprise you, just like real people. Laurell K. Hamilton I think I've spent so much time playing characters that are so far away from me and learning how to technically build and how to technically put something on top of you. Josh Lucas You can perform all kind of characters but you cannot change what people feel for you. Sophie Marceau |
