I don't like to think that maybe I'm just getting old. I'm not too excited about watching a huge explosion. I'm more interested in people and characters.

Norman Jewison You love all your characters, even the ridiculous ones. You have to on some level; they're your weird creations in some kind of way. I don't even know how you approach the process of conceiving the characters if in a sense you hated them. It's just absurd. Joel Coen I guess there's a certain amount of poking fun at certain characters, but that's because there is something amusing about them or about the way they behave, so I guess you can say that that's poking fun at the character. But the character is your own invention, so who cares? Joel Coen For my own family, I would always choose the makeshift, surrogate family formed by various characters unrelated by blood. Anne Tyler If you got a good imagination, a lot of confidence and you kind of know what you are saying, then you might be able to do it. I know a lot of colorful characters at home that would make great actors. Jason Statham My father was always very interested in space. I watch Star Trek and all those things, but I always had a different picture in my mind... maybe closer to Alien. I don't see it in space as much as I do see it in different planets, with each having its own strange characters. Sigourney Weaver You have to find something there that relates to the characters and reality on some level. Victor Garber A lot of my characters in all of my books have a self-destructive urge. They'll do precisely the thing that they know is wrong, take a perverse delight in doing the wrong thing. Richard Russo In the theater, characters have to cut the umbilical cord from the writer and talk in their own voices. Irwin Shaw All the Disney lead male characters always have this kind of John Davidson kind of look to them. They all look like the same guy, and all the females look like the same, and I think the guys are just way too big. Mike Judge I write easily, let's put it that way. And in a novel particularly, the characters take over. And they tell me what to say and they tell me what they're doing. And I'm a third of the way into a novel and then I just let the characters finish it for me. Andrew Greeley I think in Vice and American Me I played very silent, rigid characters and people remember them. Edward James Olmos I consciously try to end my novels at a point where I won't have to wonder about my characters ever again. Anne Tyler The Swords were still interesting but by then a cast of characters had started to appear and go on from book to book, and other things about the world began to feel constricting. And there were other things I wanted to do, so I closed the series up and stopped it. Fred Saberhagen I have too much respect for the characters I play to make them anything but as real as they can possibly be. I have a great deal of respect for all of them, otherwise I wouldn't do them. And I don't want to screw them by not portraying them honestly. Kyra Sedgwick It can certainly happen that characters in more sophisticated stories can "take over" as they develop and change the author's original ideas. Well, it certainly happens to me at times. Margaret Mahy One of the things I really like about Ford's films is how there is always a focus on the way characters live, and not just the male heroes. Ken Burns Example has more followers than reason. We unconsciously imitate what pleases us, and approximate to the characters we most admire. Christian Nestell Bovee Real-life people are often the hardest to play, people that you recreate who have actually lived, because you have to live up to people's knowledge of those characters. Derek Jacobi And I'd like to believe that's true, you know, kind of showing gay people in this kind of light and - where it's not about that, it's just about the characters for the first time, like those shows were.
