When I read a book I seem to read it with my eyes only, but now and then I come across a passage, perhaps only a phrase, which has a meaning for me, and it becomes part of me.

W. Somerset Maugham A book that is shut is but a block. Thomas Fuller She can't even chew gum and walk in a straight line, let alone write a book. Liam Gallagher The book to read is not the one which thinks for you, but the one which makes you think. No book in the world equals the Bible for that. Harper Lee The best of a book is not the thought which it contains, but the thought which it suggests; just as the charm of music dwells not in the tones but in the echoes of our hearts. John Greenleaf Whittier I began thinking there should be an American phrase book, 'cause I've got an Italian phrase book, and an Arabic one... now a British one. I think it'd be pretty good to have an American phrase book. Joe Strummer I do have to say that I think that President Obama is the greatest President in the history of all of our Presidents, and that he can do no wrong in my book. So how's that for prejudice on the Democratic side? Denis Leary A wonderful thing about a book, in contrast to a computer screen, is that you can take it to bed with you. Daniel J. Boorstin A best-seller was a book which somehow sold well because it was selling well. Daniel J. Boorstin Film music should have the same relationship to the film drama that somebody's piano playing in my living room has on the book I am reading. Igor Stravinsky It is no great art to say something briefly when, like Tacitus, one has something to say; when one has nothing to say, however, and none the less writes a whole book and makes truth into a liar - that I call an achievement. Horace I got a book deal without even turning in one shred of a writing sample. Janice Dickinson A book comes and says, "Write me." My job is to try to serve it to the best of my ability, which is never good enough, but all I can do is listen to it, do what it tells me and collaborate. Madeleine L'Engle You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children. Madeleine L'Engle I don't know what your childhood was like, but we didn't have much money. We'd go to a movie on a Saturday night, then on Wednesday night my parents would walk us over to the library. It was such a big deal, to go in and get my own book. Robert Redford What I would do is when I was younger I would draw in a sketch book something that happened in my life and then write a little something on the side about what happened or what the story. Robert Redford With each book I write, I become more and more convinced that the books have a life of their own, quite apart from me. Madeleine L'Engle A book is like a piece of rope; it takes on meaning only in connection with the things it holds together. Norman Cousins The way a book is read, which is to say, the qualities a reader brings to a book can have as much to do with its worth as anything the author puts into it. Norman Cousins Usually, when people get to the end of a chapter, they close the book and go to sleep. I deliberately write a book so when the reader gets to the end of the chapter, he or she must turn one more page. Sidney Sheldon |
