Focus in on the genre you want to write, and read books in that genre. A LOT of books by a variety of authors. And read with questions in your mind.

Nicholas Sparks God authors desires in your heart, then fulfills His Will by enabling you to realize those desires. Edwin Louis Cole God will finish what He authors, but He is not obligated to finish what He has not authored. Edwin Louis Cole Good authors, too, who once knew better words now only use four-letter words writing prose... anything goes. Cole Porter Great authors are admirable in this respect: in every generation they make for disagreement. Through them we become aware of our differences. Andre Gide How many authors are there among writers? Author means originator. Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel I can't speak for the other authors, but what I hoped to achieve was to illuminate certain corners of the Lucas universe that hadn't yet been explored. Walter Jon Williams I enjoyed reading all the classic authors like Isaac Asimov and Bradbury. William Shatner I have a private press. I'm a book artist. I publish books of other authors and artists. I do the illustrating. I set the type. I print it myself on my press. I do everything but bind it. Gloria Stuart I have this theory that the likeability question comes up so much more with female characters created by female authors than it does with male characters and male authors. Curtis Sittenfeld I should have no objection to go over the same life from its beginning to the end: requesting only the advantage authors have, of correcting in a second edition the faults of the first. Benjamin Franklin I think authors can get into trouble viewing the subject matter as their turf. Laura Hillenbrand I think many people are terribly afraid of being demoted by the Darwinian scheme from the role of authors and creators in their own right into being just places where things happen in the universe. Daniel Dennett I thought it was amazing to work with authors, to get a manuscript and try to make up a cover for it. Dick Bruna I've always wondered why there isn't a great French novel about the German occupation. The nouveau roman authors weren't interested in telling that sort of thing. Manuel Puig I've had a lot of very positive feedback about those stories, and seem to have struck upon something that most people feel. I can also tap dance, and don't know many other authors who can. Paul Kane If you can find collaborators whose strengths compliment your own, the result can be more than the sum of its authors. Walter Jon Williams In comparing various authors with one another, I have discovered that some of the gravest and latest writers have transcribed, word for word, from former works, without making acknowledgment. Pliny the Elder In England only uneducated people show off their knowledge; nobody quotes Latin or Greek authors in the course of conversation, unless he has never read them. George Mikes In quoting of books, quote such authors as are usually read; others you may read for your own satisfaction, but not name them. John Selden |
